George W. Bush Has Mosul’s Clit Blood on His Hands

Bad news for women in Mosul. Isis has declared their intention to mutilate the genitals of every woman in the city aged 11-46. Isis marched into the power vacuum created in Mosul by the US. After deposing Saddam Hussein and propping up of a toothless head of state and ineffectual military, that military left their US-bought arms in the city and fled Isis attacks.

So now a radical Islamist terror organization controls the area, and is better armed than ever. They’ve run out most of the Christians, painting houses with the Arabic letter N to mark them so they could confiscate their properties.

It’s probably worth asking how how we got here. Female genital mutilation is a barbaric practice, and in raw numbers, due to population increases, it’s growing. But overall it is declining in frequency as a percentage as countries modernize. Iraq was until recently such a modern place. While Saddam was certainly no saint, except in the Kurdish north, the practice was rare. Among Iraqi Christians, it was non-existent.

Too slow, but steady modernization is a hallmark of middle eastern countries which are not militarily invaded by Western powers. Compare Tunisia and Lebanon to Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Of course externally imposed regime change is just one factor of many. But the track record of who steps up to fill power vacuums left by outsiders isn’t good. In fact, in all three countries the same thing has happened or is happening. After the US, along with other Western countries, violently replace a relatively secular government radical Islamist militant terrorists tend to step up and fill the void.

So the argument that imperial militaries are spreading Democracy or liberating people is demonstrably false. Regardless of the intentions, neither the US nor any other country is able to set up new governments that have either the will of the people or the military might to maintain control. To believe otherwise is to ignore all of recent, and colonial, history.

So then these adventures in military intervention and sovereignty violation must be justified through an appeal to their right to self-defense. But that also doesn’t pass muster in the case of Iraq. In the intervening years since invasion, no evidence of Saddam having access to any weaponry capable of any harm to the US has been produced by any government.

Foreign intervention and occupation has consequences. Right now, thousands of women in Mosul will lose their labia and clitoruses as a result of the US invading and occupying Iraq. We can never know whether Isis would control Mosul right now if Saddam were still in power, or if the US had left as soon as it was firmly established that Iraq posed no threat to the safety of Americans. But because the US did invade Iraq, because the government did take responsibility for rebuilding Iraq, because the war was justified on the grounds that Iraqis would be freer and safer for having been invaded, and because President Barack Obama did not end the occupation as he claimed to do and promised he would, the US government is responsible for what is happening right now to these people.
