The rare moment a nationally televised sitcom told the truth about our government

You have to go back to 1990 for this one. It was the sitcom “Roseanne”, starring Roseann Barr. A woman who’s no stranger to giving her political opinions. Despite how you may feel about her political views, the message she delivered in this episode could resonate with most people. At least anyone who hates paying taxes.

Season 2, episode 22, titled “April Fool’s Day”, actually had nothing to do with April Fools, but rather the struggles most Americans face during tax season. One of the best lines in the show was in the very beginning when Dan Connor (John Goodman) says about the IRS; “Stupid system, run by stupid people, thought up by stupid people, hired by stupid people” to which Roseanne replies “Who were elected by even stupider people”.

The episode would also touch on the government’s debt & how it can’t even manage it’s own books.

Towards the end of the episode, Roseanne goes on a tirade with some great lines regarding the IRS, that you would never think you’d hear on a nationally televised sitcom.

Here are some of the lines:

” I mean, us people, the poor people, and us regular people, we’re paying more taxes than the rich people, ’cause they got all the lawyers to figure out the loopholes!”

“This stuff is impossible to understand! These laws and explaination of laws; no human being can really understand these things, you know! That’s why you gotta go get some $200-an-hour lawyer to even explain the crap to you, you know, and I can’t afford $200-an-hour!”

Watch the full episode below. Very funny ending as well during the closing credits.
