An article that made the rounds today titled “Rand Paul Declares War On Isis and allows for boots on the ground” was clearly meant to target the Liberty movement. We all know a title like this, means nothing to traditional Republicans, as they’d be happy about such a headline. It was meant to upset Rand Paul’s Libertarian supporters. Which it succeeded. Lots of “he lost my vote” tweets/Facebook posts today. But before the Liberty movement has its typical knee-jerk reaction, take a deep breath and think for a minute. Think about the bigger picture.
Rand Paul is trying to pass a bill that calls for troops on the ground in Iraq against ISIS. Well, we already have troops on the ground in Iraq, so not much would change there. Rand Paul also wants Obama to seek congressional approval for this action. Something Obama thinks he’s above having to do. As the article states “The Obama administration has justified the bombing campaign against ISIS by claiming that it is enabled by the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Afghanistan, passed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, and the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq. Paul’s resolution would terminate the latter and place an expiration date on the former, one year after the passing of his resolution.”
So in actuality, thanks to Rand’s bill, these wars in Iraq would be forced to end after a year, rather than the indefinite length they have now.
What Rand has done is made a strategy that actually reduces war, sound war-hawkish. This bill will actually stand a chance to pass with Republican support, because on the surface, it seems like your typical war-hawk agenda.
